At JW Walker & Sons we recognise the connection between our work in the manufacture and restoration of pipe organs and its effect on the natural world. We therefore aim to exist as a part of a continuing cycle as opposed to a net consumer of resources.
Our chief natural resource is timber. This is sourced from suppliers who can certify its origin in responsibly managed forests and which meets the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council.
Our timber waste is re-used. We avoid the use of particle boards entirely and a proportion of extracted waste material is therefore able to be distributed for animal bedding and other uses before eventual composting.
In restoration work our consumption of raw materials is governed closely by those used in original manufacture. As our business is driven by specialised commissions, rather than bulk manufacturing, we are able to machine and re-use good quality timber reclaimed in the course of one project to produce smaller new parts for another, improving like for like matching of surface characteristics and dimensional stability in the eventual product.
Pipe metal is re-cast and comparatively small proportions of tin are introduced to achieve the required alloy for new pipes to be made.
As part of a continuing process we review the wider consequences of our operation, in particular the impact of travel and transportation, to make logistics efficient.
